Discover: Tunji Ige, The Grammy-Nominated Rapper & Songwriter

July 14, 2018 | by Daniel Orubo

While it ended up losing to Bruno Mars' "That's What I Like", with Khalid's well-deserved 'Best R&B Song' Grammy nomination for "Location", came 22-year-old Tunji Ige's first-ever Grammy nomination for helping pen the critically acclaimed gem.

So, with an impressive EP, two solid mixtapes and a Grammy nomination under his belt, it feels like it's just a matter of time before the brilliant up-and-comer becomes a household name, and actually scores another Grammy nod for his own music.

Born in Pennsylvania to Nigerian parents, Tunji was first introduced to music through his parents — who were big fans of Fela Kuti and Roy Ayers. When he turned 10, he started creating his own music, and by 11 he was dabbling in production.

In 2014, Tunji finally released his first body of work, a self-produced mixtape titled The Love Project. The 13-track project showed off his songwriting and producing chops, marking him as a force to be reckoned with amongst underground rap fans.

In 2016, he then followed up that solid mixtape with Missed Calls, a seven-track EP that found him brilliantly channeling Drake and Kanye West. A few months later, he dropped another strong mixtape, Prince of July, to celebrate his 21st birthday.
Speaking with The Hundreds about always wanting to pursue music, Tunji said:

"I was like a kid in school that was trying to pursue music [but] I was stuck in school, because [I] had to be in school. And the music was the escape.
“Even in school, just like, ‘Oh snap, we’re taking notes? Let me go on Logic real quick.’ It’s always been like that."
