Nu Nairobi: Inside Nairobi’s Music Scene (Documentary)
Filmmaker Mia Zur-Szpiro spent six months in Kenya making a documentary on the thriving music scene in East Africa titled Nu Nairobi: Inside Nairobi’s music scene.
The documentary takes us on a journey of Kenya’s vivid music scene, featuring an in-depth look at the genres and artists that make up Nairobi’s thriving cultural landscape. With interviews from EA Wave to Gregg Tendwa to Patricia Kihoro to Foozak to Blinky Bill and Octopizzo among others, the well-nuanced documentary covers what’s going on in the scene right now.
It highlights problems faced by creatives within the region such as lack of support from the government, lack of parental support, classism within the industry among other issues – and more importantly what can be done about it.
Artists have started banding together to advance the culture. Sharing ideas and resources has greatly helped the movement. It also highlights how artist’s spaces like The Alchemist have helped in the growth of the movement.
This documentary points out what we have known for a long time. It’s good to see an appreciation of our culture spread internationally.
