Kahindo: A Luxury and Sustainable Clothing Brand

July 2, 2020 | By Deneal Florence

KAHINDO is a sustainable and ethical luxury brand for women, designed in New York, and sourced as well as produced in Africa, using fair trade practices. It was conceived with the ethos and mission of empowering women of every age and size. KAHINDO has showcased an Autumn/ Winter 2020 collection at AFI Cape Town Fashion Week on in March, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The collection strongly reflected Founder and Designer, Kahindo Mateene’s African heritage which serves as a visual narrative seen throughout her design aesthetic, bold prints, and colours. It was also inspired by the colours of the Great Barrier Reef and the Aborigines, specifically Aboriginal art.

Silhouettes in the KAHINDO collection beautifully cater for the multifaceted woman featuring pieces that can go from day to night with the greatest ease, pieces great for making a statement in the boardroom, and staples that effortlessly transition from a casual to a more “dressed up” look when perfectly paired with accessories.

Expect a colour palette of blues; the 2020 Pantone colour of the year and greens with a subtle hint of purple and pink, coupled with bold prints and a strong emphasis on comfort- catering for all body shapes.

As per the norm in previous seasons, a custom print has been developed. KAHINDO enjoys adding their special spin as well as inspiration drawn from travels on traditional “African” prints. They have also collaborated with RefuSHE, an organization supporting refugee women in Kenya by providing them with a safe work environment and regular income, to create a tie-dye fabric in classic blue, the Pantone colour for 2020.
